Berean Press was founded by James Alderson.
Berean Press takes its name and its disposition from the Bereans of the New Testament – those who received the apostolic word with eagerness and then tested it against Scripture. That same combination of readiness and rigour animates everything we publish.
The press was founded on the conviction that Christians at every stage of their walk with God deserve writing that meets them honestly, holds them to the full weight of what Scripture asks, and trusts them to bear fruit. We publish for the new Christian who needs good food from the beginning, and for the Christian of many years who wants to be challenged further.
We are an independent press, which means we are free to publish according to conviction rather than market. Our books are not optimised for algorithms or seasonal trends. They are written to last.
The editorial standard applied to every manuscript is the same: theological rigour, scriptural honesty, and genuine pastoral purpose. We do not lower that standard for accessibility, and we do not mistake complexity for depth.
What unites everything Berean Press publishes is a commitment to formation – to work that, received honestly and lived with seriously, is likely to produce the observable fruit that Jesus named as the measure of a life oriented toward God.
We are not denominationally narrow. An author from any strand of the Church that holds the historic creeds and takes Scripture seriously is an author we want to hear from. What is required is theological seriousness, not theological uniformity.
Our editorial process is exacting. We take time. We do not rush manuscripts into print. Every book that carries the Berean Press colophon has been read, questioned, argued over, and refined. What we publish
Berean Press publishes formational Christian writing – work rooted in the whole of Scripture, with the teachings of Jesus as its primary lens, that helps Christians at any stage of their walk with God live more faithfully in His light.
Every manuscript is tested against a single question: Does this work bear fruit in lives more clearly reflecting the teachings of Jesus? That question has three dimensions.
Within and without our remit
There are two distinct reasons a manuscript may fall outside the Berean Press remit, and we always make clear which applies. A manuscript declined on categorical grounds is declined because it does not fall within our remit – not because we have found it wanting.
- A book that takes a single aspect of the Christian life – prayer, money, suffering, vocation – and treats it with theological care, honest engagement with difficulty, and genuine pastoral warmth
- Confessional theology that is rigorous in argument and honest about what it cannot resolve
- Scripture reflection that opens the text to a reader who has read it before and finds something they had not seen
- Work that a new Christian could enter and a mature Christian could not dismiss
- Writing that reorients attention toward God rather than arguing against the culture
- Literary fiction – a legitimate endeavour, but not what Berean Press exists to publish
- Academic or educational resources – valuable, but serving a different purpose
- Apologetic argument as its primary purpose
- Devotional material that does not root itself in Scripture
- Work whose primary purpose is to establish a voice, settle a score, or occupy a position in a debate
- Work that comforts without transforming, or argues correctly but forgets the person holding the book
- Any manuscript accepted on the basis of commercial appeal alone
